Model Y Juniper vs Legacy
Europe's best-selling EV got its first big refresh in 2025. Here's what changed, and whether it's worth paying more for on the used market.

The Model Y arrived in Europe in 2021 and quickly became one of the best-selling cars on the continent, built first in Shanghai and, from 2022, at Giga Berlin. In January 2025 Tesla opened orders for the refreshed version, code-named Juniper, with the first European deliveries in March 2025. Because so many legacy cars were sold, the used market is dominated by them — which is exactly why the comparison matters.

Owners also report a softer, more comfortable ride than the often-criticised firm legacy suspension. A Juniper Performance version followed later in 2025.
Not all legacy Model Ys are the same
- Where it was built: early European cars came from Shanghai; from 2022 many came from Giga Berlin. Both are fine, but available options and paint colours differed between the two factories.
- Rear-wheel drive: the RWD Model Y arrived in Europe in 2022 and quickly became the cheapest way into a Model Y. It is one of the most common legacy cars on the used market.
- 7 seats: a small number of legacy Model Ys have the optional third row. They are rare — filter by seats if you need one.
- Age and warranty: the battery and drive unit are covered for 8 years from first registration, so a 2021 car still has years of cover left (see our warranty guide).

Juniper supply on the used market is still small compared with the legacy car, so prices can move quickly as more cars come back from leases. Setting a price alert (PRO) is the easiest way to catch a good one.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose a Juniper if comfort matters: the quieter cabin, softer ride, ventilated seats and rear screen make it a better family and long-distance car.
- Choose a legacy Model Y for value. With a large supply you can be picky about mileage, colour and options, and the core car — space, efficiency and charging — is very similar.
- Compare across countries: the same car can be priced quite differently between markets. See prices by country for where they are currently lowest.
How to find the right car
Use the Generation filter on Tesla Inventory Europe to show only Legacy or only Juniper cars, then narrow by trim, drivetrain, seats, mileage and country. Each listing shows its price history, and PRO members also see a deal score that tells you whether the asking price is good for that car. Comparing with a saloon? Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Tesla Model Y Juniper?
Juniper is the code name of the refreshed Model Y. It went on sale in Europe in January 2025, with the first deliveries in Germany from March 2025. The Model Y sold from 2021 to early 2025 is usually called the legacy Model Y.
How do I know if a used Model Y is a Juniper?
Juniper cars have a full-width light bar at the front and rear, and most trims are named "Premium" (for example Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive). In Tesla's data, Juniper trim codes start at MTY4x and above, while legacy cars use MTY0x to MTY3x. Every listing on Tesla Inventory Europe shows its generation, and you can filter for Legacy or Juniper.
Is a legacy Model Y still a good buy?
Yes. The legacy Model Y is a proven car with a large used supply, which keeps prices competitive. It lacks the Juniper's quieter cabin, ventilated seats and rear screen, but the drivetrain, space and charging experience are very similar.
Does the Model Y Juniper keep the indicator stalk?
Yes. Unlike the Model 3 Highland, the Model Y Juniper kept a physical indicator stalk. Drive selection is done on the touchscreen.
