The Model 3 is a saloon and the Model Y a taller crossover built on largely the same platform, with the same screens, software, Supercharging and driver-assistance features. The choice comes down to space, range and budget.

Figures for the current generations (Model 3 Highland, Model Y Juniper); legacy cars are very similar in size.
Range and driving
The Model 3 is lower and lighter, so it uses less energy: with a comparable battery it goes noticeably further. As an example, a Highland Model 3 Long Range AWD is rated at up to 678 km WLTP, against around 568 km for a Juniper Model Y Long Range AWD on 20-inch wheels. It also feels more agile on twisty roads. The Model Y rides higher, is easier to get in and out of, and its large tailgate makes it the more practical everyday car.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a used Model 3 or Model Y cheaper?
It depends on the generation and mileage, which is why the table on this page is updated daily. Compare cars of the same generation (Legacy vs Legacy, Highland vs Juniper), since the newer cars cost noticeably more.
Which has more range, the Model 3 or the Model Y?
With a similar battery and drivetrain, the Model 3 goes further: it is lower, lighter and more aerodynamic. The difference is typically several tens of kilometres on the WLTP cycle, and more at motorway speeds.
Is the Model Y better for families?
Usually, yes. It has a higher seating position, easier access to the rear seats and child seats, a large hatchback boot and more headroom. Some legacy Model Y cars even have a small third row of seats.
Can both tow a trailer?
Both can be fitted with a tow hitch. The Model Y is rated for heavier trailers than the Model 3, so if you tow a caravan or a heavy trailer, the Model Y is the better choice. Check the towing capacity for the exact car in its registration documents.
